What marriage registration means

Marriage registration is the formal recording of an already solemnized marriage in the government records. The Delhi Government requires compulsory registration. A registration certificate serves as legal proof, safeguarding rights in inheritance, bank nominees, joint investments, and is mandatory for spouse visas or passport name additions.

Two routes: Hindu Marriage Act or Special Marriage Act

Registration falls under two acts depending on the couple's religious backgrounds:

• Hindu Marriage Act, 1955: Applicable if both bride and groom are Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, or Jain. The marriage must have already been solemnized via religious rituals.
• Special Marriage Act, 1954: Applicable if either party belongs to another religion (e.g. Christian, Muslim, Jewish, or foreign national), or if the couple desires a direct civil marriage without religious ceremonies.

The online process in Delhi

Delhi's registration is managed online via the Delhi Government's e-District portal:

• Form Submission: Complete detail forms regarding bride, groom, parents, and witnesses. Upload soft copies of IDs, age proofs, and wedding photos.
• Slot Booking: Pay government fees online and secure an appointment slot for SDM office verification.
• Physical Verification: Visit the SDM office on the appointment date along with witnesses and original documents. The SDM approves the registry, and a digital certificate is issued.

Documents required

Both husband and wife must compile these documents for SDM verification:

• Aadhar Card and PAN Card (legally mandatory).
• Age Proof (Birth Certificate or 10th School Certificate).
• Marriage Invitation Card or Temple solemnization certificate (if already married).
• 4 Passport size photographs of husband and wife.
• Joint marriage photograph of solemnization rituals.
• Witness documentation (Aadhar, PAN, and photos of 2 witnesses).

How long it takes

Under the standard route, slots are generally scheduled within 10-15 days, and the certificate is issued after the appointment. Under the Tatkal scheme, priority slots are booked immediately, and the digital certificate is signed and made downloadable within 24 hours of SDM verification.
