What is Arya Samaj marriage?

Arya Samaj marriage is a simplified marriage system established under Vedic tenets by Swami Dayanand Saraswati in 1875. It eliminates long, elaborate rituals and is open to Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Jains. If any of the parties belong to other religions, they must undergo conversion (Shuddhi ritual) before solemnizing the Arya Samaj marriage.

What is the legality of Arya Samaj marriage?

The solemnization is fully legal under the Arya Samaj Marriage Validation Act, 1937. However, to secure full statutory benefits (e.g., passports, visas, property registry), the couple must register their marriage at the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) office under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955. Once registered, the government issues a globally valid marriage certificate.

Who can perform Arya Samaj marriage?

Any couple who satisfies the legal marriage criteria in India can apply:

• The bride must have completed 18 years of age and the groom must have completed 21 years of age.
• Both parties must reside or work in Delhi, or provide proof of temporary stay.
• A mutual consent is mandatory. Consent under pressure is legally void.

How the ceremony is conducted?

The ceremony takes place in an authorized Arya Samaj Mandir and includes Vedic rituals such as:

• Havan: Purifying fire offering with Vedic hymns.
• Saptapadi: Seven vows / circumambulations around the sacred fire.
• Kanyadaan: Giving away of the bride (where applicable).
• Sindoor & Mangalsutra: Application of vermilion and wearing of the wedding thread.

Documents required for Arya Samaj marriage

To book and perform the marriage, you must provide:

• Age Proof (Birth Certificate, Matriculation Certificate, or Passport) of both.
• Address Proof (Voter ID, Aadhar Card, or Driving License) of both.
• 6 Passport size photos of both bride and groom.
• If divorced/widowed, a copy of the divorce decree or death certificate of the deceased spouse.

Witness requirements for registration

Two witnesses who are adults (above 18 years of age) with valid ID proofs (Aadhar card, PAN card) must be present at both the temple solemnization and the SDM registry office to vouch for the couple.

Timeline for getting the certificate

The temple certificate is issued immediately after the 1-2 hour rituals. The government registry certificate under the SDM is processed within 24 to 48 hours of your SDM court appointment under the Tatkal rules.

Validity of the marriage certificate

The SDM certificate is globally accepted and recognized in all government institutions, courts, embassies, and visa applications. It remains valid forever and can only be annulled through a decree of divorce in a court of law.
